In Korea, English has been a regular subject at elementary school since 1997. This study has a twofold purpose: (1) to find out what kinds of strategies elementary school students use when they communicate in English, and (2) to consider how to teach English at the elementary school level. In this study six elementary school students in the 4th grade were interviewed and the conversations of the author and six students were meticulously analyzed. The results of the analysis led into a tripartite conclusion. First, all the subjects were able to communicate in English on daily conversation topics such as greetings, self-introduction, weather/sea-son and clothing, Second, the subjects showed their confidence in English conversations, although some individual differences were found. They tried to complete their expressions in English; if they had any difficulties, they started with English and completed in Korean. Third, the subjects used the strategies such as 'asking again', 'asking for help with no response', 'bridging', 'guessing', 'asking in L1', etc.
