A Study on the Sex-Role Socialization - Adolescents' Identifications with Their Parents -

  • 21

This study is on adolescent sex-role socialization. Adolescents' identifications with same-sex parent i.e. the relationships between the same-sex parents' sex-role behaviors and the adolescents' sex-role attitudes are examined. Parent's role behavior is defined in terms of mother's employment: when mother has a job, it is defined as more modern and more tradition when mother does not have a job because sex-role differentiation is more flexible when mother has a job. The sex-role attitude scale is developed for this study. Results are as follows. Sons tend to identify with their fathers. When paternal influence is salient and when he belongs to nuclear family, son's identification with his father's sex-role behavior is more effective. It is reverse to the hypothesis that when father's general successfulness is high, son's identification will be more effective. Daughters do not tend to identify with their mothers. Only when mother's general successfulness is high, daughter's identification with her mother is effective. These results partly affirm the hypotheses but partly deny the hypotheses.
