A study of Pre-natal Education and Post-natal Practices of Rural Housewives

The purpose of this study is a comparative investigation of the differences between rural and city housewives. 1) Cognition of pre-natal education and pre-natal practices 2) Cognition of post-natal education and post-natal practices The data in this study was applied to 210 housewives in Seoul and 294 house wives in Pohang. Percentage and x² scores were calculated with the following results: 1. Most women had a good understand of traditional pre-natal education. City wives, in particular, had more pre-natal education and tried to listen to classical music and read good books. 2. Rural wives showed more control over sex life after 5 or 6 months pregnancy. And they tented to do more of their own hard work than city wives 3. Most pregnant wives dreamed before or during pregnancy. 4. City wives preferred to give birth in hospital and rural wives at home. 5. The rest period after birth was 14 to 21 days for rural wives and one month for city wives. 6. The custom of hanging a string for 21 days after birth outside the house was more prevalent among rural housewives than city house wives. 7. Over half of city wives and half of rural wives thought hanging a string is superstitious. 8. Most city wives and about half rural wives did not set up a table for the 3 gods governing child birth. 9. Rural wives tented to preserve the baby's cut navel string to use it for curing the baby's disease. 10. More city wives than rural wives celebrated the 21st and 100th day after the baby's birth.
