An Investigation on the Dimensions of Home Furniture

The purpose of this study is to investigate the dimensions of home furniture which are mass-producted by typical furniture company in Korea, and to find out whether they are designed by modular co-ordinated system or not. The data in this study were drawn through the pamplets made by 12 typical furniture company. They were collected for a year, 1984 and 1296 item of different models were applied. 1296 models were devided into 25 kinds of furniture. Dimensions of width, depth and height of furniture were analysed by percentage. The results of this investigation are as follows. 1. Most popular items of home furniture are storage units. That is because they use few built in furniture in most of Korean home. 2. They place much kinds of furniture in bed room than any other rooms. 3. Most of furniture were not designed by modular co-ordinated system, and the companies use many kinds of dimensions devided into very small interval even for the same kind of items. So it would be hard to find unity in furniture dimensions if they don't buy them at the same time. 4. Comparatively well modular co-ordinated furniture in this study are clothes closets(W.D.H), cabinets for beddings (W.D.H), lamp table (D), Mun Kaps, Korean style side board (D.H) and living boards or cabinets (H). 5. Bad modular co-ordinated furniture in this study are chest for making-up(W.H), chest of drawers(W.H) and single beds(W.D.H).
