A study on the bleaching of hemp fabric by sodium hypo chlorite solution

An Investigation is described in which the effects of bleaching on the reflectance value, tensile strength, light and washing Fastness of hemp fabrics were studied. Different concentration and pH values of solution of sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide were treated under different conditions. The bleached sample were also reduced with sodium thio sulfate. By the result of this experiments, following conclusion were obtained. 1. The maximum reflectance value is obtained with a pH of 10.5 and reaction time of between 7.5min 10.0 min for all the concentraction of available chlorine and pH values studied. 2. The lower the value of pH, the faster is the rate of decomposition of sodium hypochlorite solution. 3. The more the number of treatment, the better the reflectance value of hemp fabrie. However, the rate of increasing is not so considerable. 4. It was better in the reflectance value with hydrogen peroxide treatment of hemp fabrics than with sodium hypo chlorite solution treatment. 5. The contents of Lignin in hempfabric was decreased by treating with sodium hypochlorite solution and was also known that the tensile strength of hempfabric was influenced by the contents of Lignin.
