In modern capitalistic society, high level of material consumption functions as a "meaning in life" for many consumers, i.e. it provides an aim for their daily endeavours. Such a consumption based orientation is commonly labeled materialism. This paper reviews literiture on materialism to examine the various conceptual & operational definitions, the relation to Weber's protestantism, and the effect on consumer welfare. Widespread criticism on materialism and implications for consumer education are also discussed.
