서양복식에 표현된 남성 이미지의 해석에 관한 고찰 - 닫힌 체계에 의한 인체 이미지를 중심으로 -

A Study on the interpretations of man's image in western clothing

This study aims at analysing the senses of beauty appeared in the man's clothes by examining the male images in the man's fashion. The summary of this study is as follows. First, in the history of fashion, were dramatically changed since the end of middle ages when they began to take the 'CLOSED SYSTEM' of trousers instead of the "OPENED SYSTEM' of tunic dress characterized by common bisexual clothing. According to this change, a division was made between male and female in the fashion. Second, in the modern times, man's clothes took the form of contemporary man's clothes, so to speak, that of man's suit in other to adapt itself to the industrialized society where rapid modernization and urbanization took place. The male images found in the man's fashion (clothes) could be explained as follow. First, man's clothes, whose form was laid foundation in the latter half of the 14th century and accomplished in the latter half of the 18th century, took the manlike design on strengthening the emphasis of the clear visual division between male and female clothes despite their synthetical attempt in design. So male image is characterized by manlike and manful image laying emphasis on the male sex. Second, under the influence of industrial Revolution and Civilian Revolution which enable the transition of power from the noblesse to bourgeoisie, a image of responsibility and capability was needed in the politico-economic fields. So the contemporary self-restrained male image is reflected in the fashion, and this fashion presents a modern, standardized, urban and democratic image with due authority. Third, in contrast to the traditional image of female clothes, man's clothes, which evolved in other to adapt themselves to the city life, represent some self-restrained and simple image, which were influenced by English Puritanism and English design style.
