Actual Condition of Physical Environment in Infancy and Early Childhood Education Facilities

This study was fulfilled to investigate actual condition of physical environment in infancy and early childhood education facilities in order to offer basic information for planning desirable preschool facilities in Korea from the view point of human ecological approach. Methods used in this study were literature study. interview with authorities and teachers, and field survey of two infancy and early childhood education facilities noted for well-designed in Seoul during April to July 1999. It was noticed that teachers were satisfied at their physical environment of the facilities by interviews. Most of physical environment and equipments were evaluated as good enough except observation rooms and napping rooms. There were no observation rooms for visitors such as students or children's parents. It is recommended to prepare a separate room for observation in order not to interrupt children's activities. Napping rooms were located in a multi-purpose room so that napping can be disturbed by play of other class. For collecting useful information for planning of preschool child-care Facility, it is desirable to approach from interdisciplinary fields as well as human ecological area, because integrated output is essential for good design.
