Analysis of Sex-Role in the Picture Fairy Tale of Early Childhood

The purpose of study is to analyse the sex-role stereotyping for male and female character in the picture fairy tale, and to supply a fundamental data to help the early childhood have an equal sex-role character. The results are as follows: First, among the characters in the picture fairy tales, the most popular gender is neuter and the next one is female, and male in sentences, but male, neuter and female in picture. Second, the most popular gender for the main character is male and the next one is neuter and female. Third, as a result of the analysis on the subjects for gender with the sentences and the picture stories in the fairy tales, 「Problem-solving capability ? Creativity」, 「Wisdom ? Knowledge」, 「Nature ? Love of animals」are emphasized for male and female in the sentences, but 「problem-solving capability ? Creativity」for male and 「Nature ? Love of animals」for female in the picture books. Forth, as a result of analysis on the job tendency of male and female adults in the picture fairy tales, males appears to engage in various kinds of jobs. On the other hand, female is usually described as mostly house wives in the limited jobs. Fifth, in the picture fairy tales, male adults often appear to engage in social jobs, but female adults in household affairs. Male children usually do dynamic activities, but female children do static work. Sixth, as a result of analysis on the activity place outdoors and indoor for the main characters, hero tends to act outdoor more often than heroine.
