To Know the response of neutrophils to fish pathogenic bacteria or other foreign materials, changes in the number and PAS reaction of neutrophils from the kidney and peripheral blood were investigated in eels(Anguilla japonica). The eels were intraperitoneally injected with formalin-killd fish pathogenic bacteria or other foreign material, such as carbon, latex, casein, and LPS etc. In the fish injected with bacteria or LPS, neutrophils in the kidney decreased to a minimun level and those in peripheral blood. increase to a maximum level at the similar time after the injection. But there were not significant changes in neutrophils number of eels injected with other foreign materials. PAS reaction of the neutrophils cytoplasm became stroger in fish injected with bacteria or LPS than in fish injected with other materials, and the strongly positive neutrophils, in PAS reaction were mostly abuandant when the number of neutrophils reached the lowest level in kidney or the highest in peripheral blood. These results indicate that increase in the number of peripheral neutrophils results from the release of neutrophils stored in the kidney by the stimuli of fish pathogenic bacteria and foreign material" and that PAS positive materials in the cytoplasm of peripheral neutrophils are accumulated in the kidney before being released into the peripheral blood stream.
