The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of Saemangeum watershed area in view of pollutant loading and to predict water quality in terms of COD and T-P concentration. In view of wastewater flow rate, it is estimated that domestic sewage occupy the 77.1% and industrial wastewater occupy the 19.6% and animal wastes occupy the 3.3% of the total flow at the year of 2001. However, in view of pollutant loadinganimal wastes contribute 60.7% in BOD loading, 64.5% in T-N loading and 94.7% in T-P loading. Thus, it can be concluded that pollutant loading generated from animal wastes is key factor in determining water quality of Saemangeum lake. It can be evaluated that control for point source pollution can not be a sale solution because most of pollutant loadings generated by animal wastes acts as non-point source. When comparing with Shiwha lake, the generation rate of total phosphorus per unit area of Saemangeum watershed is higher than that of Sihwha watershed and most of them originate from animal wastes will be originated from animal wastes. It can be concluded that water quality of Saemangeurn lake can not satisfy water Quality standard for agriculture even though planned schemes for pollutant reduction will be conducted successfully.
