The Production of Undaria Larninaria, Porphyra and Ulva , the major seaweed species in Korea, has increased annually but the consumption of these seaweeds hardly increasedbecause their uses were restricted as dried or salted foods. Thus it is important to developnew processed product such as biological active foods, for the effective utilization of thesealgac. The pimary objective of the study is to screen biological activities such asanti-complemetary. heavy metal binding and macrophage stimulating activities of algalpolysaccharides and determine of their physico-chemical propertiesThe contents of acid polysaccharides isolated from Undaria, Laminaria, Porphyra·andUlva were 9.0%, 10.3%, 11.2% and 10.8% respectively. The acid Polysaccharides of Ulva washeteropolysaccharides which consisted of sulfate( 17.2% ), gluucuronic acid( 20.O% ),xylost, rhammnose. glucose and galactose. Porphyran isolated from porphyra showed the highest anti-complementary activity which inhibited total complement hemlysis more than 90% in comparition with control, and the activity incresed when sulfate contont and molecular weightwas high. In case of binding capacity of acid algal polysaccharides with heavy metal( Cd, Pb) in vitro, alginate and fucoidan isolated from Undaria, Laminaria showed effective heavymetals binding abilitis and the binding capacity of alginate increased when M/G ratio was high.
