This study emphasizes a design methodology, Tri-optic, for designing effective optical illusion like identity marks. There have been many identity mark design methods practiced by the corporate identity designers, but few designers understand how to utilize geometric forms to the identity mark designs. It is the designer`s responsibility to solve the client`s goal and mission with a simple and unique graphic representational symbol therefore he/she needs to explore many design approaches during design problem-solving process. For that reason, this Tri-optic design methodology provides an additional design possibility during the design problem solving.<BR> The Tri-optic design method is based on Sir William Farish`s drawing system. He invented the isometric perspective system of technical drawing during the industrial revolution in the eighteenth-century Britain. I have been taught and utilized this technical drawing method successfully in the graphic design classes during 3 years at the University of North Texas. This corporate identity mark design pedagogic method resulted many students to see the different side of creative design process in identity mark design. Most of all, the students learned 4 things: 1) relationship between visual perception and visual cognition, 2) how to design an optical-illusion like identity mark, 3) Understand many identity mark design possibilities, and 4) how to design tri-optic patterns and patterns using identity marks. Also, I organized tri-optic identity mark into 4 different groups: 1) Third dimensional letterform, 2) Pattern using an object, 3) Pattern using a Letter, and 4) Abstract shapes.
