스포츠, 그 안의 민주주의

스포츠는 사회 문화의 큰 틀을 결코 벗어날 수 없다. 민주주의는 현대 산업사회를 지배하는 철학적 생활양식이나 그것의 실현이 쉽지는 않다. 스포츠 안에 내재된 훈련 또는 단련이라는 개념은 규칙, 질서, 명령, 복종, 그리고 인내 등의 의미를 나타내고 다양성, 자율, 참여 등의 가치보다 크게 스포츠의 정체성을 구성하는 데에 역할을 해왔던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 절대적 진리에 대한 부정이 과학적 사실에서 반영되고, 개인의 다양성과 참여가 강조되는 포스트 모더니즘의 패러다임이 확산되었던 1980년대 후반 이후의 변화 속에서 체육학에서도, 스포츠 현장에서도, 그리고 학교 체육 수업에서도 다양성과 대중적인 참여라는 민주주의적 가치에 대한 적극적인 실천의 필요성이 제기되기 시작하였다. 이러한 가치의 스포츠 연구에의 반영은 일반 대중의 적극적 스포츠 참여라는 측면뿐 아니라,학교 체육과 사회체육 그리고 체육학의 존립 기반을 강화하는 중요한 일이라고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to look at how democratic ingredients such as `diversity` and `participation` have been instilled into sports and physical education. Dichotomous paradigm has been with us for a long time. It has forced us to keep either-or mechanism. Sports and physical education as one of our cultural phenomena has been also under the paradigm. However, scientific facts that could not be explained by the pre-existing scientific principles have led us to recognize that there could be more than either-or. Collapse of our belief on absolute scientific truth has encouraged us to search for third view instead of monotonous either-ors, and respect for others` perspectives has been underlined. It is called Post-Modernism. Post-Modern approach has influenced sports and physical education as well. Sports and physical education, as one of the academic fields started focusing on participanrs` and students` view in sporting and learning. Encouraging peoples` and students` diversity and participation are prerequisite for their active life and academic achievement in physical education.
