Leisure Participation and Constraint of Korean House Wife

This study was to understand the pattern of leisure participation and constraint for house wives. The research informants were recruited by S sport center located in Suwon, Kyunggido and total six house wives who have elementary students learning for swimming in the S sport center. Age ranging was from 36 to 41 and academic status was over the graduation of high school. The data were collected in the several interviews and field observations, and analyzed by the content analysis. The leisure participation was classified in five patterns: 1) reconstruction of leisure; 2) leisure with family; 3) leisure alone; 4) talk with peer mothers; and 5) expecting leisure. As the factors of leisure constraint, six categorization were emerged: 1) insertion situation toward family leisure; 2) role as manager of children; 3) insistent feeling for multiple roles; 4) absence of husband role in family; 5) economic burden; and 6) the psychological matter of the person herself. Based on these results, an adequate leisure education must apply into Korean educational realm, and public leisure program must develop. Sharing role between husband and wife and reconsideration of leisure consciousness also must be accomplished for the promising leisure participation of Korean house wives.
