This study is a preliminary research for environmentally friendly house remodelling. The purpose of this study was to make clear the indoor environmental effects of front balcony in apartment houses. The field measurements of indoor environmental elements were carried out at an ordinary house with an existing front balcony and a house renovated the front balcony into the living room during autumn and winter. The measurements in two-subject houses were taken on simultaneously the 4th~5th of October 2002 and the 20th~21th of January 2003. The interview and questionnaire survey carried out during the 14th~29th of January 2003, respondents consisted of 31 residents living in renovated houses and 37 residents living in ordinary houses. As results, the averages indoor temperature and globe temperature in the ordinary house were 0.4℃ and 0.8℃ higher than the renovated house during autumn. In winter, estimated heating time of the renovated house was longer than that of the ordinary house. The daily ranges of indoor temperature and globe temperature in the renovated house were wider than the ordinary house during autumn and winter. The uniformity ratio range of daylight in the ordinary house were calculated at 1/2.3 ~1/4.4 during autumn and 1/3.4~1/6.2 during winter, but those of the renovated house were 1/6.4~1/14.6 and 1/6~1/16.2. Therefore, it was found that indoor temperature, globe temperature and uniformity ratio of daylight in the ordinary house maintained more constant or comfortable than in the renovated house by thermal buffer effect and earning effect of front balcony. The residents living in ordinary houses show relatively positive responses on the indoor thermal environment during winter, glare by daylight, and outdoor noise. The average heating charges in renovated houses came out to be more expensive than the ordinary houses. From these results and an environmentally friendly viewpoint, it is undesirable to renovate the front balcony as an addition to the living room.
