초기서사의 한 양태인 전기소설은 산문과 운문, 즉 삽입시가 절묘하게 결합된 독특한 장르이다. 더욱 주목할 점은 서사장르로서의 전기소설이 서정성의 미감을 함께 발산하는 장르라는 점이다. 본고는 이 점을 초기소설의 양식화와 그 서사적 맥락에 대한 지표로 활용하기 위해 주목하였다. 그 대상은 나말여초(羅末麗初)의 전기 「최치원(崔致遠)」과 『금오신회(金鰲新話)』. 그리고 17세기에 걸쳐 있는 「주생전(周生傳)」ㆍ「운영천(雲英傳)」등이다. 이들 초기소설의 삽입시는 기본적으로 비극미를 담보하고 있으면서 ‘절제’와 ‘내면화’의 미감을 발산하고 있다.<BR> 그런데 이런 초기 전기소설의 삽입시의 기능도 정점 변화하여, 주인공의 성격 창조에 그 역할이 한정되기도 한다. 그러면서도 결말의 무한한 여운과 비극적 정조를 확보하는데 적잖은 기여를 하고 있다. 이와 같은 전기소설의 삽입시의 역할은 그러나 뒷시기로 오면서 약화되는 경향을 띄게 된다. 그것은 전기소설의 변모와도 일정한 연관이 있는데, 이는 그만큼 ‘소설’이 서사성을 강화시키면서 서정성을 소거시키는, ‘근대소설’의 양식으로 변모하고 있었다는 유력한 증거로도 이해된다. 초기소설의 양식화와 그 변모는 바로 이 삽입시의 역할과 기능의 문제에서 따져볼 필요가 있겠다.
Chuanchi, a kind of the early narrative, is an unique genre which prose and poetry were exquisitely mixed in. It is more significant that Chaunchi as a narrative genre also shows lyrical beauty. In this paper, I kept an eye on this to use it as a barometer of formalization of the early romance and its narrative contexture. The subjects of this study are Choi, Chiwon(崔致遠)-one of Chuanchi novels of the late Shila and the early Koryo), Geomo-shinwha(金鰲新話), Zusaeng-jeon(周生傳 : The love story of Mr. Zu), and Woonyoungjeon(雲英傳 : The love story of Miss Woonyoung). Poems interposed in these early romances show an esthetic sense of moderation and internalization, having the tragic beauty basically.<BR> By the way, the function of these poems interposed in early Chuanchi had changed little by little, and sometimes their roles were limited to create the character of a protagonist. Even in this case they greatly contribute to the infinite suggestion of the end and tragic feeling. Their roles like this, however, show a tendency to weakening as time goes by. This is considerably related to a transfiguration of Chuanchi, It shows that a romance had eliminated lyric characteristics, consolidating narrative characteristics, and then had been transfigured into the form of a modem novel. I think that formalization of the early romance and its transfiguration should be examined in relation to the function of these poems interposed in Chuanchi.
