The importance of relaxation was central for Stanislavski. the father of modern acting theories. He sincerely believed that in relaxation `lay the whole secret. the whole soul of creativeness on the stage ..... All the rest would come from this state and perception of physical freedom.` He considered relaxation in his discoveries as the most important factor that an actor must possess.
However, in spite of his emphasis on relaxation, his pupils and the coming acting teachers have only been concerned about how to express emotion itself. They ignored the basis for creating the emotion - relaxation. Only Lee Strasberg, who originated Method Acting with his adaptation of Stanislavski`s theories. suggested relaxation techniques. But they cannot be said to be concrete and systematic. They are not good enough for achieving the relaxation necessary for an actor.
Other fields. such as sports psychology and medicine, outside of actor training have studied actively about how to get relaxation and obtained excellent results. But they are not applicable to actor`s relaxation because the reasons for tension and the purposes of relaxation are different from those of actors.
Sports player`s tension comes from competition anxiety in a sporting event. So it has a little similarity to actor`s tension. This paper tries taking some merits of other fields, especially sports psychology and applies them to actor`s relaxation.
In conclusion, this paper suggests a relaxation process for actors. The first step is `Progressive relaxation.` It is useful for getting the basic relaxation because repeated contraction and relaxation in regular sequence makes the muscles of each part soft. As a result. it makes our whole body soft and refreshed. For the second step, actors try to get detailed relaxation mentally and physically through Strasberg`s method. Finally, actors achieve emotional peace and self-confidence, using imagery techniques. This paper also suggests introducing affective method in imagery techniques. It is more helpful for an actor to concentrate on his role and get confidence as a character. After completing all the steps successively. the actor is ready to accept all the stimuli produced on stage and to react to them with inner strength.
