This study was intended to examine and identify factors affecting body weight, %body fat, and blood lipid components in obese middle-aged women after 12 weeks of exercise. The subjects were divided into two groups of a gym ball exercise group (10 subjects) and a combined exercise group with gym ball and aerobic exercise (10 subjects), and then performed the exercises for 12 weeks. Both gym ball exercise and combined exercise with gym ball and aerobic exercise were performed at an intensity of maximal heart rate 65%, 70 minutes of exercise time, and the frequency of 3 times a week. The results of this study according to the types of exercise were as follows. 1. The changes in body weights after 12 weeks of the gym ball exercise and combined exercise with gym ball and aerobic exercise were tended to decrease in the two groups, and it was also statistically significant (P<.05). 2. The changes in %body fat after 12 weeks of the gym ball exercise and combined exercise with gym ball and aerobic exercise were tended to decrease in the two groups, but it was not statistically significant in the gym ball exercise group (p>.05), while it was statistically significant in the combined exercise group with gym ball and aerobic exercise (P<.05). 3. The changes in TC after 12 weeks of the gym ball exercise and combined exercise with gym ball and aerobic exercise were seen to increase in the gym ball exercise group and to decrease in the combined group, but it was not statistically significant in both groups (p>.05). 4. The changes in HDL-C after 12 weeks of the gym ball exercise and combined exercise with gym ball and aerobic exercise were seen to increase in both groups, but it wasnot statistically significant (p>.05). 5. The changes in LDL-C after 12 weeks of the gym ball exercise and combined exercise with gym ball and aerobic exercise were seen to decrease in both groups, and a statistical significance was found (P<.05). In conclusion, these results indicate that gym ball exercise program is favorable effective in both weight, %body fat, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C in obese middle-aged women. However. it is considered that more various gym ball exercise programs are required to be developed in order to be more effective in preventing and treating obesity.
