「설공찬전(薛公瓚傳)」 파동과 16세기 소설인식의 추이

이 연구는 16세기 벽두에 터진 「설공찬전」 파동을 통해서 16세기 소설인식의 추이를 다루고 있다. 먼저 「설공찬전」 파동이 일어난 전후시기의 정치적 역학 관계에 주목했다. 이단 논쟁이 치열했던 사실을 통해 정치적, 이데올로기적으로 우위에 서려했던 사림쪽에서 「설공찬전」 문제를 필요 이상으로 확대시켰다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 이 파동은 또 다른 연에서 시사하는 점이 있었으니, 그것은 파동 전후 시기에 소설이 광범위하게 유통, 향유되고 있었던 사회문화적 현상을 반영한 하나의 사건이었다.<BR> 다음으로 「설공찬전」을 두고 벌어졌던 옹호와 비판의 논쟁을 통해서 이후 16세기 소설인식의 추이를 가늠해 보았다. 즉 ‘기양(技?)’과 ‘좌도난정(左道亂正)’이라는 두 가지 관점이 제시되었는데, 이는 향후 소설인식을 상징적으로 대별한다. 그러다가 16세기 중반이 되면 범람하는 소설류에 대한 완전한 차단이 불가능해졌고, 그래서 새롭게 ‘교훈성’이란 잣대가 마련되어 제한적으로나마 소설이 인정되기에 이르렀다.<BR> 이와 같은 16세기 「설공찬전」 파동과 소설인식의 추이는 17세기 본격적인 소설시대를 위한 든든한 토대가 되었으며, 그러면서도 전통시대에 항상 비판의 시선에서 자유롭지 못한 ‘소설양식’이 형성되는 과정으로 이해된다.

In this paper. I dealt with the evolution of (he 16th-century understanding of novels by reviewing the 「Sulgongchanjun」 tumult which broke out in the early 16th century. First of all, I paid attention to the political power relationship around the time of the tumult when the heated controversies over the heterodox thoughts were in process. and found out that the literati made 「Sulgongchanjun」 a big issue on purpose and took advantage of this issue in order to secure political and ideological superiority. On the other hand, this incident can be considered as reflecting the social and cultural reality mat novels were broadly circulated and read at that time.<BR> Secondly, by looking into the controversy between the critics and defenders of 「Sulgongchanjun」, I examined how understanding of novels changed in the 16th century, The ideas of `An Express Desire` and `Misgovernment`, were presented and emphasized in the controversy, and these ideas came to symbolically represent the subsequent evolution of understandings of novels. By mid-16th century. it had become apparent trot it was impossible to completely prohibit the circulation of novels. Though with some limitation, the circulation of novels carne to be authorized based upon the newly devised principle of moral lesson.<BR> The 「Sulgongchanjun」 tumult and the change of attitude toward novels. which contributed to the arrangement of some preconditions favorable to the full-fledged development of novels in the 17th century. can be understood, at least in part, as the formation process of the style of novels which were always subject to the criticism from the orthodoxy of the traditional society,
