Yu Do-soon`s poetry has closer relation to the rhythm than that of any other poets. He began to write his poems with free verse form which breaks restricted rhythms under the influence of the Western Christianity. But he found his way to Korean typical verse form after the middle years of his poetic career and published nursery rhyme, shijo, ballad, and peasant poetry.
He, therefore, exposed the pro-mass consciousness in his poems by the sectional rhythm, which is the typical characteristic of Korean poetry, and the versification of three or four feet. The consciousness made him write many lyrics of popular songs. By singing love, separation, wandering, and nostalgia through so-called `song verse`, he represented the tragic reality and the feeling of loss of Korean people under Japanese rule.
As for him, poetry means just song and song does just poetry. He began to write free verse which breaks restricted typical versification, came back to Korean traditional regular versification, besides jumped over the wall of poetry, and went forward song or music.
