마르코 폴로의 『동방견문록』은 13세기 몽골제국과 그 주변 나라들에 대한 생생하고 경이로운 이야기로 가득 차 있지만 동시에 저서와 저자를 둘러싼 의문과 불신이 끊이지 않았다. 그 의문의 핵심은 마르코 폴로가 직접 쿠빌라이가 통치하던 중국에 다녀왔느냐는 것과 중국의 전적(典籍) 어디에도 마르코 폴로의 이름이 보이지 않는다는 것이다. 본고에서는 책 속의 내용을 토대로 다양한 사본, 폴로 일행의 여정, 마르코 폴로의 신분 등에 대해 검토함으로써 『동방견문록』이 마르코 폴로의 실제 체험을 바탕으로 완성된 고전임을 재확인하고자 하였다. 필자는 『동방견문록』 속의 지리적 공간을 세 개의 영역으로 나누어 보았다. 그것은 대칸 쿠빌라이가 지배하는 지역, 대칸이 종주권을 주장하는 지역, 대칸과 관계가 없는 지역이다. 마르코 폴로는 바로 이 세 곳의 지역적 공간을 넘나들며 쿠빌라이가 내린 모종의 임무를 수행하며 총애를 받았던 인물로 추정된다. 『동방견문록』 속의 ‘과장’에도 불구하고, 다양한 민족이 공존하던 몽골제국 시대에 마르코 폴로와 같은 인물은 많은 ‘색목인’ 중 한 사람에 불과했다. 그러나 비록 ‘허풍’은 있지만 몽골제국의 중요한 정치적 사건과 실상에 대한 마르코 폴로의 언급은 놀라울 정도로 정확한 면이 있다. 한국과 일본의 독자에게는 친숙한 『동방견문록』은 마르코 폴로의 책에 붙여진 다양한 제목 중 하나이다. 제노바의 감옥에서 자신이 구술하고 루스티켈로에게 대필시켜 완성된 원본의 제목은 현재 확인할 길이 없다. 그런 점에서『동방견문록』은 마르코 폴로 자신의 생생한 경험과 체험을 바탕으로 시대와 지역에 따라 다양하게 명명되며 완성된 고전이다. 결론적으로, 폴로의 저작을 둘러싼 불신은 700년 전이라는 시대적 배경을 고려하지 않은 철저히 현재적 관점에서 바라본 편협한 인식의 산물이다.
Marco Polo"s book has fascinated readers for many years with lively and wonderful stories about the Mongol Empire of the 13th century and the surrounding countries. At the same time, it never ceased to cast doubt on the writings and the authorship. The heart of the problem is whether Marco Polo went to China as his name are nowhere to be found in Chinese texts. On the basis of the book’s contents, this paper examines the various manuscripts and analyzes Marco Polo’s itineraries and status in the Empire in order to reconfirm that Polo"s book is a classic based on his true experience. The geographical space in Polo"s book can be divided into three areas, namely the area dominated by the Great Khan, the area claimed by the Great Khan, and the area that is not related to the Great Khan. Marco Polo is presumed to have been favoured to carry out a number of missions for Khubilai across these three regions. Marco Polo might have ‘exaggerated’ his status, but in the era of the Mongol Empire where diverse ethnic groups coexisted, someone like Marco Polo was just another “semuren”. Rather, what it worth noting is that his remarks on the important political events and facts regarding the Mongol Empire are surprisingly accurate. Marco Polo"s book has been designated with a number of titles. There is no way to confirm what the original title was, as he only told his stories to Rustichello when they were imprisoned in Genoa and made him write them down in his stead. In that sense, Marco Polo‘s book is a classic based on his vivid experiences, which has been named variously and completed over many years. In conclusion, the disbelief surrounding Marco Polo"s book results from a way of seeing the book that is anchored in the present and does not consider the historical context of 700 years ago.
