강경은 충청남도 논산에서의 서남쪽으로 10 km 지점, 금강의 왼쪽 해안에 위치해 수운(水運)이 편리하고 미곡의 집산지로 알려진 곳이다. 조선 시대 이래 300년 동안 상업지로서 발달해 왔기 때문에 강경시장은 대구시장, 평양시 장과 함께 3대 시장으로 불려왔다. 호남선 철도의 부설로 철도가 발달하면서 수운이 쇠퇴하였고 그 결과 강경은 침체하기 시작하였으며 수운 중심의 운송이 철도수송으로 바뀌면서 지역이 변화한 대표적인 사례라고 하겠다. 본 연구는 철도가 가져온 지역의 변화를 통해 철도가 어떠한 역할을 수행했는가를 실증적으로 밝혔다는 것에 의의가 있다. 특히 수운이 발달한 지역이 상권이 철도가 도입되면서 수운이 쇠퇴하고 내륙수송으로 연결된 타 지역으로 흡수되어 침체한 사례 라고 하겠다. 본 연구에서는 그동안의 연구에서 중점적으로 고려하지 못한 철도의 상황과 개통으로 지역이 내륙에 편입 되는 과정과 이를 통해 수운과 지역이 쇠퇴하는 과정을 그 사례로 들어 설명하였다. 이를 통해 그동안 이론적으로 이야 기됐던 원거리 대량수송에서 철도가 도입되어 속도의 경쟁력과 내륙의 유통망이 확보되면서 수운이 급속하게 쇠퇴하였 다는 것을 구체적인 사례를 통해 설명해 보았다.
Ganggyeong is located 10 km southwest of Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do, on the left shore of the Geumgang River, also known as a location within easy reach of water transportation and a trading center for rice grains. For 300 years since the Choseon Dynasty, Ganggyeong Market has been called one of the three major markets, along with the Daegu and Pyongyang markets, as it has developed as a commercial site. As the railway developed due to the construction of the Honam Line, the water transportation industry declined and, as a result, Ganggyeong began to stagnate; this was a representative example of a change brought in the region as water-oriented transportation changed to railways. The significance of this study can be found as it empirically reveals the role that railways played in regional change. In particular, this is a case in which is show the overall downturn in the region due to the introduction of railroads in commercial areas, and the absorption of this region into other regions connected by inland transport, which gradually replaced water transportation. In this study, the process by which the region was incorporated into the inland area with opening of railways is considered, something that has not been intensively considered in previous studies, by presenting an example of the decline in water transportation and the region. As a result, we have explained through specific examples that the introduction of railways with large volume transportation, the competitiveness of the speed, and the securement of inland distribution networks all led to a rapid decline in water transportation.
