통일신라의 기간도로인 5통에 관해서는 종래, 동해통은 동남해안 방면, 북해통은 강릉-고성에 이르는 동해안 방면, 북요통과 염지통은 한주와 삭주와 관련된 북방을 향하는 도로 등으로 비정해왔다. 이 가운데, 북부가야를 거쳐 남원을 지나는 해남통은 인정할 수 있다. 그러나, 동해통을 김해-함안-진주 방면으로 설정한 것은 인정하기 어렵다. 연동하여 5개 통의 설정은, 동해통은 9주 중 명주와 관련있는 동해안로, 북해통은 북원경(원주)을 지나 삭주를 지나는 삭주대로, 북요통은 중원경(충주)을 지나 한주를 지나는 한주대로를 설정할 수 있다. 염지통은 서원경(청주)을 지나는 웅주대로를 설정할 수 있다. 이러한 조합은, 5통에 보이는 방위관은, 5소경 및 9주, 그리고 삼국사기 제사지에 보이는 4해, 5악, 4진, 4독에 보이는 4방관과 조합해 볼 때 부합한다.
