A Study on Michael Chekhov’s Imaginary Body for Character Building and Acting Exercise

본 연구는 체홉의 가상의 신체의 유래와 개념, 인물 구축, 연기 훈련 방법을 고찰하고 이를 통해 체홉의 인물 구축 이론을 올바로 이해하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 가상의 신체는 최근 다양한 학문에 적용되는 메타버스와 유사한 개념으로, 배우의 내면에 생성되는 가상의 캐릭터의 세계이다. 체홉은 루돌프 슈타이너의 가상의 신체 옷 입기를 수용하여 가상의 신체를 창안했다. 체홉의 가상의 신체는 배우의 자아와캐릭터의 자아와의 관계 및 본질에 관한 인물 구축이론이고, 배우는 배역의 본질인 캐릭터의 자아를 무대에서 표현하기 위해 가상의 신체라는 다양한 옷을입고 연기하는 것이다. 가상의 신체는 인물 구축과연기 훈련으로서의 두 가지 성격을 나타낸다. 배우들이 가상의 신체를 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록, 가상의 신체 상상, 가상의 신체 옷 입기, 가상의 신체 연기의 3 단계 과정으로 구분해 고찰했고 대표적인 가상의 신체 연기 훈련도 살펴봤다. 가상의 신체는 배우의 인물 구축에 큰 영향을 미치는 요소여서, 가상의 신체에 따라 연극과 캐릭터의 완성도가 달라질 수 있다. 가상의 신체는 다양한 인물을 구축해내야 하는 배우에게 있어 유용한 연기 테크닉이고, 틀에 박힌 배우가 자신의 연기를 고수하려는 태도에서 벗어나 캐릭터에 대한 새로운 해석을 발견할 수 있는 창조적 연기 도구라고 본다. 체홉의 가상의 신체가 창조적 연기를 지향하는 배우들에 의해 무대 연기와 카메라연기에서 다양하게 활용되기를 기대한다.

This study aims to examine the origin, concept, character building, and acting exercise of Michael Chekhov’s Imaginary Body and to understand how to apply it to actor’s acting. It is a concept similar to the Metaverse applied to various studies recently, and is the world of virtual character created inside the actor. Chekhov created it by accepting Rudolf Steiner’s ‘wearing the imaginary body clothes’ which is an expression of the relationship between the human body and the spiritual ego. Chekhov’s imaginary body is a character building theory about the relationship between the actor’s ego and the character’s ego. Actors act wearing various clothes called imaginary body to express the invisible character’s ego as the essence of the role. It has two characteristics as character building and acting exercise. In order for the actors to easily understand the imaginary body, it was divided into three steps: imaging the imaginary body, wearing the imaginary body clothes, and acting the imaginary body. Also, this study looked at the representative acting exercise of it. For the actor, it is an important factor that has a great influence on character building. The completeness of play and character may vary depending on the imaginary body created by the actor. The Actor should be able to create various imaginary body according to their psychology, imagination, and sense, and to uniquely characterize it. It is a useful acting technique for the actor who need to build a variety of characters. It is a creative acting technique that allows you to discover a new interpretation of the character by breaking away from the stereotyped actor, the attitude of sticking to one’s acting. This researcher hopes that Chekhov’s imaginary body will help actors who pursue creative acting.
