<영산회상>은 석가모니불이 만년에 영취산에서 『법화경』을 설하던 법회를 주제로 하고 있으며, 그 신앙적 토대는 『법화경』의 사상과 신앙이다. <영산회상>의 노랫말에 등장하는 영산회상 ‘불보살’은 불교 예배의 대상이자 신자들에게 복을 내려 주고 어려운 처지에 있는 이들을 구제하는 『법화경』의 주인공인 석가모니불과 보살들이다. 신자들은 <영산회상>을 통해 불보살을 반복해서 부르며 신앙의 대상에서 자비를 구한다. 그리고 불보살처럼 수행을 통해 마음을 닦고 번뇌를 끊으면 깨달음을 얻어 누구나 부처가 될 수 있음을 인식하게 된다. 유학자들이 수신을 위한 음악으로 선택한 불교 음악 <영산회상>은 풍류 음악이라는 위상과 역할을 부여 받아 그에 걸맞게 변신하였다. <영산회상>의 다양한 변주 양상이 일률적인 법칙성을 강조하는 종교 음악에서 멀어진 결과라고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 <영산회상>의 형식과 내용에는 영산회상도에서 볼 수 있는 삼층 구조, 원형 구도, 호법 정신 등의 불교적 속성이 반영되어 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
<Yeongsanhoesang> has the theme of the Dharma meeting where Shakyamuni Buddha preached the Lotus Sutra at Yeongchwisan in his later years, and its religious basis is the idea and belief of the Lotus Sutra. The ‘Yeongsanhoesang Bulbosal(佛菩薩)’ appearing in the lyrics of <Yeongsanhoesang> are the Sakyamuni Buddha and Bodhisattvas who are the subject of Buddhist worship and are the main characters of the Lotus Sutra, which will bless and provide relief to believers. Believers repeatedly sang the Bodhisattva through <Youngsanhoesang> and seek mercy from the object of their faith. At the same time, like the Sakyamuni Buddha and Bodhisattvas, if you cultivate your mind through meditation and stop suffering, you will attain enlightenment and realize that anyone can become a Buddha. The buddhist music <Yeongsanhoesang>, chosen by Confucian scholars as music for the reception, was given the status and role of pungryu(風流) music, and some of it was transformed accordingly. The variety of variations in <Yeongsanhoesang> can be said to be the result of moving away from religious music that emphasizes uniform lawfulness. Nevertheless, it was confirmed through a comparison with Youngsanhoesangdo of Hubultaenghwa (後佛幀畵, a Buddhist painting hanging behind the main Buddha statue in the Dharma Hall) that the Buddhist musical attributes of <Yeongsanhoesang> are inherited in its form and content. Nevertheless, it can be confirmed that the form and contents of <Yeongsanhoesang> reflect Buddhist attributes such as the three- layered structure, circular composition, and law-protection spirit that can be seen in the paintings of Youngsanhoesangdo of Hubultaenghwa.
