Laban Movement Analysis is one of the most popular methods to teach awareness of movements. This analysis includes describing, observing, analyzing and notating, all within its own language. LMA is categorized into four sections; Body, Effort, Shape and Space. It is not a specific kind of technique, but a means to understanding movement. It is a beneficial method to find the essence of dance movement. The purpose of this project is to find more effective ways of teaching ballet technique. Through LMA, ballet technique can explain how the movements are executed, how the Body changes in Shape, and how different Body Parts move through Space. This project will analyze ballet technique taught using LMA/BF concepts and vocabularies, with the intention of helping dancers have an awareness of their bodies and technique. Through ballet classes using LMA, the dancers are expected to move with more fulfilled energy and engaged Body Parts. This study includes 2 parts that are related. One is the analysis of ballet technique through LMA. The second part is teaching classes using the analysis. To apply the analysis of LMA to ballet classes, 3 classes were held with four dancers. I analyzed each movement at the barre in order to pick out the essential points. The classes were designed to teach just the first half of a typical ballet class which is the barre work. Although, the project is mostly focused on technique, dance education is necessary to not only execute the steps but also to interpret the work artistically. LMA language encourages the dancers to imagine situations and express personal feelings. All LMA concepts and vocabulary are useful, meaningful, and can be applied to ballet classes. After analyzing the movements of ballet technique, I realized how much B/E/S/S is involved. To have awareness of the technique, the dancers should constantly think about where the Body Parts go in Space and how to get to the Space maintaining most of the time Shape Flow. By having Shape Flow, the movements have very clear Directional Shape. Ballet technique has constant Shape Flow most often in Bi-polar. By using analysis and Motif, teachers and dancers can see the essence of the movement. LMA is a tool for the dancers to have self understanding and awareness.
