In Measure for Measure, unrestrained sexuality is the object of surveillance and punishment. Unruly desire and sexual transgression, embodied in such characters as Claudio and Lucio, are the subverting power which endangers the social order; they should be restrained by authority to protect the State. However, Angelo’s corruption is the most subversive force which threatens to discredit authority, and his political transgression is the most brutally exploitative because his power is protected by the law. The Duke of Vienna in the play appoints Angelo as his deputy during his absence to protect the State from the threat of sexual transgression. The Duke’s strategy is to implement the punitive law, which had not been enacted for a long time, while at the same time avoiding criticism from the general. Angelo is also placed under the surveillance of the Duke, disguised as a Friar; Angelo is punished for his transgression but finally forgiven by the Duke who practises the godlike power. This paper discusses the aspect of power and the role of authority in Measure for Measure, with a special focus on the operation of power which is practised in the form of surveillance and punishment.
