642년에 백제는 신라의 대야성을 함락시켰는데, 이것을 계기로 김춘추가 외교활동을 전개하면서 나당동맹이 성립하였다. 이것은 동아시아 국제관계에 변화를 주면서 결국 삼국통일로 이어졌다. 제려연화는 643년에 백제가 고구려에 제안하면서 성립되었다. 목적은 백제는 신라를 공격하기 위해서, 고구려는 신라와의 충돌을 피하고 당의 침입을 대비하기 위해서인데, 당이 개입하지 못하도록 차단하는 것은 공통적이었다. 신라는 김춘추의 대고구려외교에 의해서 제려연화를 확인하였다. 643년에 백제는 신라의 당항성을 공격하였는데, 신라가 당에 구원을 요청하자 당 태종은 3가지 대책을 제시하였다. 645년 당 태종이 고구려를 정벌하면서 제려연화는 마무리되었던 것으로 보인다. 648년에 김춘추는 청병과 당제의 수용을 위하여 대당외교를 전개하였다. 당시 당 태종은 병색이 완연한 상태에서 죽음을 앞두고 있었던 것으로 추정된다. 김춘추는 고구려를 먼저 정벌한 후에 백제를 정벌할 것을 제안하면서 649년에 나당동맹이 성립하였다. 나당동맹의 내용은 군사 동원의 방법과 시기, 그리고 전후 처리 등으로 이루어졌다. 주목되는 것은 김춘추가 당 태종으로부터 칙명을 받았다는 사실인데, 김춘추는 당 태종으로부터 구두 약속이 아니라 공식적인 문서인 조서를 받았던 것으로 보인다. 당 태종은 군사적인 계획은 645년에 고구려를 정벌할 때와 같은 방법을, 시기는 649년에 계획된 고구려 정벌에 맞추었던 것으로 보인다. 또한 전후 처리는 고구려와 백제를 평정한 후에 ‘평양이남 백제토지’를 신라에게 주겠다고 하였다. 그러나 당 태종의 죽음 이후에 신라와 당의 대내외적인 변화된 상황과 맞물리면서 나당동맹의 내용도 새롭게 변화를 맞게 되었다.
In 642, Baekje captured Daeya castle of Silla. This served as a background that the Silla and Tang Alliance was formed while Kim Chun-chu was carrying out diplomacy policy toward Tang and which resulted in changes in international relations in East Asia and eventually led to the unification of the three countries. The coalition between Baekje and Goguryeo was established in 643 when Baekje proposed it to Goguryeo to attack Danghang castle in Silla. The purpose of which Baekje would attack Silla and Goguryeo would defend against the intrusion of Tang, but it had a common goal to prevent Tang from intervening. In 645, when Tang Taizong conquered Goguryeo, the coalition between Goguryeo and Baekje ended. In 648, Kim Chun-chu developed diplomatics toward Tang due to military request and acceptance of Tang"s system. The Silla and Tang Alliance was established in 649, when Kim Chun-Chu suggested that they should conquer Goguryeo first and then Baekje. Kim Chun-chu received an official document, a royal document, from Tang Taizong, not an oral promise to the Silla and Tang Alliance. Tang Taizong used the same method as when he conquered Goguryeo in 645, and set the time for the planned conquest of Goguryeo in 649. In the post-war process, after conquering Goguryeo and Baekje, he offered to give Silla "south of Pyongyang the land of Baekje".
