1941년 池內宏은 고구려 최후의 전쟁에 관한 대작의 논문을 발표했다. 하지만 그는 戰線의 유동성에 대해 거의 고려하지 않았다. 그의 글을 보면 고구려가 별 저항도 하지 못하고 무너진 느낌이 든다. 그러나 고구려 최후의 전쟁에서 전선의 一進一退가 반복되었다. 667년 9월 新城을 함락하고 압록강 하류의 大行城을 접수한 李勣이 10월 2일 청천강까지 남하하였지만, 11월 11일에 압록강으로 철수했다. 668년 2월 唐軍이 扶餘城을 함락시키자 男建의 고구려군 5만이 북상했다. 李勣은 압록강 하류에 위치한 大行城을 포기하고 하루거리인 開州(오골성 부근)의 薛賀水까지 후퇴하여 대열을 정비하였다. 그곳에서 李勣은 男建의 군대를 격파했고, 南進하여 大行城을 탈환했다. 같은 해 6월 李勣은 평양 북쪽 20리 까지 진격하여 29일 신라의 왕자 김인문 등을 접견했다. 하지만 舊백제지역에서 大谷과 漢山을 거쳐 북상하던 劉仁願의 熊津都督府 軍團과 연결되지 못했다. 7월 초 劉仁願의 병력 1만이 男建 군대의 공격을 받아 전멸했고, 李勣은 鴨綠柵으로 철수해 버렸다. 직후 扶餘城 방면에서 대군(蕃漢 50만)을 이끌고 남하한 契苾何力이 평양으로 진격하였고 8월 초 숨을 고른 李勣이 뒤를 이었다. 8월 12일에 唐軍은 북상한 신라군과 합류하여 평양성을 포위하였고, 9월 12일에 함락시켰다. 거목 고구려가 쓰러졌다.

Immediately after the fall of Puyo castle(扶餘城) by the Chinese army in February 668, Goguryeo"s 50,000 troops moved north. Lee Jik gave up Teaheang castle and retreated to the nearby Ogol Fortress There, Lee Jik defeated the Goguryeo army and went south to recapture Teaheang castle. In June of the same year, Lee Jik advanced north of Pyeongyang. In that place, he met Silla’s prince Kim Inmoon. However, his troops were not connected with another Chinese army coming from south from Baekje. In early July, However, his troops could not come into contact with 10,000 Chinese troops coming from south from Baekje. Because, the latter were attacked and exterminated by Goguryeo troops in early July. and Lee Jik withdrew to Amnokgang. In early August, Lee Jik advanced to south, surrounded the Pyeongyang Castle on August 12 and captured it on September 12. As a result, the Kingdom of Goguryeo fell, but not without fierce resistance. Goguryeo’s final war was magnificent.
