이 연구는 기존의 의사소통 능력 척도들이 특정 영역에 초점을 맞춘 것이어서 포괄적인 개인 의사소통 능력을 측정하기 위해서는 여러 척도를 동시에 사용해야만 하며 이로 인해 설문을 실시하는데 시간이 많이 걸릴 수 있음을 지적했다. 따라서 신뢰도가 낮아질 수 있는 단점에도 불구하고 항목 수가 적절하면서도 구성개념을 제대로 반영하여 내용 타당도를 확보할 수 있는 포괄적인 대인 의사소통 능력 척도(Global Interpersonal Communi- cation Competence Scale: GICC)를 개발하고자 했다. 이를 위해 선행연구가 제시한 항목 중 의미가 불분명한 차원을 제거하고 새로운 차원을 추가했다. 이같은 절차를 통하여 개발한 척도가 적절한 수준의 신뢰도를 보였으며 기준 변인으로 사용된 다른 척도와 의미 있는 상관관계를 보여 동반타당도(concurrent validity)와 수렴타당도(convergent validity)가 확보되었다. 아울러 개발된 척도가 갖는 문제점과 척도의 신뢰도와 타당성을 더 향상시킬 수 있는 방법을 논의하였다.
The main purpose of the current study was to develop a inclusive interpersonal communication competence scale which would tap diverse and critical sub-dimensions of interpersonal communication competence. Although so many scales or measures tapping the construct have been developed, most of them focused on a specific area or sub-construct such as empathy, self-disclosure, and immediacy. Administering so many lengthy scales simultaneously takes too much time and causes survey respondents" fatigues, which may affect the validity of the study. To develop a scale relatively short but reflecting all core aspects of the construct, based on previous studies, a total of 15 sub-dimensions were identified. Out of each dimension, three statements were selected and created to form the scale. The best item from the statements then was chosen to form the final 15-items scale. The scale indicated a sufficient level of reliability. To check the concurrent and convergent validity other previously constructed scales such as the communicative competence scale, communication adaptability scale, and self-perceived communication competence scale were used. Results showed the scale had significant correlations with all other criterion-related scales, which suggests the validity of the scale. To make the scale more reliable and valid, some recommendations were discussed.
