The challenges for public governance and public affairs in India are multitudinous. The challenge is that of reincarnating governance from a process structure to the result structure. Multiple stakeholders have sneaked into policy formulation. This article deals with several challenging issues including employment, food, education, the Direct Benefit Transfer, electoral reforms, poverty, corruption, decentralization and empowerment, service delivery, and institutional developments. The bureaucracy, which is cracking under the heavy burden of delivery on the one hand and the lack of resources on the other hand, has led to a stagnation of delivery of services or a decline in the quality standard of service. Accordingly, this paper explores the importance and challenges of public administration from a governance perspective and highlights how governance structures and administrative culture have been altered to deliver better services to citizens in India and also highlights what needs to be done to overcome the problems in the process of governance whereby efficiency and effectiveness of both policy formulation and policy execution can be made more in sync with the changing times.
