660년 신라는 당과 연합해 백제를 멸망시켰다. 당군 13만명이 덕물도에 도착하였고, 신라군 5만명이 경기도 이천으로 북상하였다. 신라군과 당군은 합군하지 않고, 각각 행군하여 백제의 수도로 향하였다. 당군은 수로로 이동하고, 신라군은 육로로 이동하였다. 황산벌에서 신라군 5만명과 백제 결사대 5천명이 격돌하였다. 황산벌이 논산 연산면 일대라는 것은 잘 알려져 있지만, 백제군이 설치한 3영의 위치에 대해서는 논란이 지속되고 있다. 계백이 이끄는 결사대가 황산벌의 험한 곳에 3영을 설치하였다는 기록 때문에, 3영의 위치를 연산면 일대의 산성에 비정하는 경향이 강하였다. 하지만 ‘黃山之原’은 ‘黃山之谷’과 대비되는 말로서, 황산의 벌판에서 벌어진 전투로 보는 것이 합리적이다. 「문무왕릉비문」을 음미해 보면, 백제 결사대는 3영이 서로 연계될 수 있도록 밀집해 배치된 것으로 보인다. 백제군 3영은 연산 일대의 교통로가 교차하는 연산리에 편성된 것으로 보는 것이 자연스럽다. 연산리 배후에 매봉이 위치해 있으며, 정상부에는 토축된 청동리산성이 자리잡고 있다. 백제 결사대는 매봉을 중심으로 북쪽, 동쪽, 남쪽 3곳에 방어진영을 편성해, 신라군을 막아선 것으로 보인다.

The Hwangsan(黃山)-Field is Yeonsan (連山) of Nonsan(論山) area. But the location of the camp of Backje army isn"t clear. When seeing through a records, a battle occurred in the field. There were a lot of infantrymen for Silla army. There were a lot of troopers for Backje army. A military camp of Backje army was connected each other. A military camp of Backje army was installed in Maebong- Mountain. There is a mountain castle to the top of the mountain. The Backje army defended the north side, the east side and the south side focusing on Maebong-Mountain. Silla army had to consume 2 days in the Hwangsan(黃山)-Field.
