사회학적 정체성 이론의 근원으로서 뒤르케임의 인간 존재 이론: 종교 생활의 원초적 형태를 중심으로

Durkheim’s Human being Theory as the Source of Sociological Identity Theory: Focusing on the Primitive Forms of Religious Life

정체성의 개념은 19세기 이후부터 심리학, 사회학, 역사학, 경제학 등 인문사회과학분야에서 다양하게 논의되어 왔다. 특히 사회학적 의미의 정체성은 뒤르케임(Durkheim)의 인간 존재에 대한 인식 방식에서 태동되었다. 그는 공동체와 연관되어 형성된 자기 인식의 태도 즉 사회적 존재의 입장에서부터 나란 무엇인지를 규정한다. 뒤르케임은 전통 사회의 분석을 통해 사회적 구속력에 따라 사회적 자아가 성립될 수 있음을 알렸다. 그의 대표 저서 <종교 생활의 원초적 형태(1912)>에서 뒤르케임은 집단의 표상 개념을 설명하며 객관성과 인간 본성의 이원성 개념을 창조했다. 종교는 표상 체계로서 우리에게 나타난다. 표상은 실재는 아니지만 현실의 실재를 그대로 반영하는 현실이다. 실재는 상징적으로 표현되고 우리의 고유한 생각(정신)은 특정 사물에 고정화된다. 개인은 집단적 표상을 통해 개인의 느낌을 표현하고 소통하고 타인과 통일체의 감각을 만든다. 표상과 실재를 둘러싼 현실을 인식하는 방식은 사회학적 정체성을 성립하는 인간 본성 이론과 연결된다. 본고는 개인 인식에 대한 사회학적 접근을 다룰 목적에서 뒤르케임의 표상 체계, 상징 체계, 객관성, 이원성의 개념을 살펴보고, 뒤르케임의 인식 방법이 사회학적 정체성 이론의 근원으로서 어떻게 해석될 수 있는지 이해해 볼 것이다.

The concept of identity was discussed in various ways in the humanities and social sciences such as psychology, history, and economics in the 19th century. Specially the identity of the sociological meaning was born in perspective of Durkheim’s human existence. He defines what I am from consciousness of self between the individual existence and social existence relating to the community. Durkheim, analyzing the traditional society, focused on the emergence of individuals in community and told that the individual can be established according to social control. He created the duality of human nature and the objectivity of representation in his most brilliant book the primitive forms of religious life(1912). A religion is a system of representation. The representation is not real, but it is a reality that reflects the reality. The reality symbolizing our thoughts(spirit/mind) fix it to a material objects. An individuals express their feeling, communicate through collective representation and create a sense of unity with others. The way to recognize the reality of representation is connected with the theory of human nature that establishes sociological identity. This article examines the concept of representation, symbolic system, objectivity, and duality of Durkheim for understanding the sociological identity. We will see how Durkheim’s approach is interpreted as the source of the theory of sociological identity.
