이 글은 1910년대 일본 유학생 출신 신지식층에 의해 정립된 ‘정육론’과 자율적 문학관, 이것이 정제되고 적용된 1920년대의 문학개론과 소설개론, 소설사 인식의 단초를 살펴보았다. 이 중 특히 이광수, 김동인, 현철의 글을 중심으로 근대 초기 소설 개념이 형성되는 맥락을 살펴보았다. 그들의 소설론 작업의 방향은, 일관된 형식원리를 설정하고 그것에 준해 당대소설을 배치하고, 자기 시대를 중심으로 스스로의 역사를 구성함으로써 자기의 기원과 경계를 설정하고 그것을 ‘현실’, ‘조선사회’로 명명하는 모습을 보인다. 이는 현재의 자기를 중심으로 과거로부터 현재를 필연화하는 역사적 시간감각이면서, ‘우리’의 경계를 구성하는 공간적 경계의 감각이다. 이처럼 근대 초기 부르주아 문인들에 의해 정립된 소설사와 민족사에서의 ‘자기 인식’은 보편지식의 승인하에, 배제와 대립, 규율과 선별, 자기의 역사화의 방식을 취하는 것이다. 그리고 이와 같은 소설인식은 이들의 기원에 있는 ‘내재성으로의 전환’에서 예고된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 내재성이 불러들인 제도적 자율성은 시야의 강제적 전환과 가치의 전도를 통해, ‘정치’와 ‘제국’이라는 ‘외부’를 소거하고 식민지 내부에서 제국의 폭력을 모방함으로써 주체가 된 부르주아의 합리화와 정당화 이데올로기라고 할 수 있는 것이다.
Here, we looked into ‘Jeongyukron(theory of cultivating one’s feeling)’ and the discretionary perspective of literature which were established by new breed of intellectuals who studied in Japan in 1910s’ and the overview of literature, overview of novel and the starting point of perceiving the history of novel 1920s’ to which they are applied. In particular among them, we looked into the context of how the concept of early modern novels was formed on the basis of the works by Lee, Gwang-Soo, Kim, Dong-In and Hyeon-Chul. Their work on the theory of novel is directed toward setting a consistant principle of form, arranging the contemporary novel on that basis, defining the origin and boundary of self by organizing the history of self on the basis of contemporary time, and naming it as ‘reality’ and ‘Joseon Society’. This shows that the imagination, that puts the contemporary self into history, complements the imagination that organize the history of modern novel. This is historical sense of time that converts the present moment from the past as an inevitable thing on the basis of contemporary self, and is a sense of novel’s history that confirms the transformation of spiritual history that Korean novels have. The awareness of self in the novel and racial history which is established by bourgeois literary men in the early modern days adopted exclusion and confrontation, regulation and selection and the historical method of self, under the approval of universal knowledge. And such awareness of novel is predicted by the ‘transformation into inherence’ which exists in their origin. The institutional discretion brought by the inherence can be said to an ideology that justifies and rationalizes bourgeois who became the subjective by eliminating the ‘outside’ called ‘politics’ and ‘empire’ and copying the violence of the empire within the colony through the forcible change of perspective and overthrow of value.
