지금까지 우리는 논리적‧과학적 사고인 패러다임적 사고를 사고의 전형적이고 보편적 모습으로 여겨 왔으며 또한 패러다임적 사고에 대해서는 비교적 잘 알고 있다. 그러나 마음의 또 다른 모습인 내러티브 사고에 대해서는 아직도 그 구체적인 특징과 형태가 어떠한지 잘 알지 못한다. 이는 내러티브 사고가 지극히 개성적이고 무정형성의 특징을 가진 난해하고 포착하기 어려운 사고 성향을 보이기도 하지만 내러티브 사고 형태를 뒷받침 해주는 이론적 측면이 아직 명확히 밝혀지지 않고 있기 때문이다. 필자는 이 논문에서 내러티브 사고에 대해 이론적 측면을 고찰함으로써 내러티브 사고 형태를 지원하는 틀이 무엇인지 밝혀 보려는 의도를 갖고 있다. 내러티브 사고의 이론적 측면을 고찰한다는 것은 넓게는 마음에 대한 문화심리학적 관점을 살펴보는 것이며 구체적으로 보면 내러티브 사고를 뒷받침해주는 문화적 도구인 문학적 장르의 특성이 내러티브 사고 형태와 어떻게 관련되는지를 알아보는 것이다. 내러티브는 이야기를 그리고 내러티브 사고는 이야기를 구성하는 마음의 작용이라고 할 수 있다. 문화심리학적 관점에 의하면, 내러티브는 상징적 산물로서 중요한 문화적 도구라고 할 수 있다. 우리는 수학이나 언어와 같은 상징적 체계, 과학적 이론이나 문학적 장르와 같은 상징적 산물을 분석함으로써 사고 양식의 특징적 모습을 볼 수 있다. 예컨대, 과학 자체의 논리에 과학적 사고의 특징이 함축되어 있듯이 문학적 형태를 담고 있는 문학적 장르에 내러티브 사고의 특징이 잠재되어 있다고 보기 때문이다.
This study examines the nature of literary genre as the mode of thought in narrative contexts. Jerome Bruner(1986) identifies two intrinsic mental modes with the cultural psychology position as the paradigmatic mode of thought and the narrative mode of thought. The narrative mode results from the application of a set of mental models that underwrite planful action to the project of recognizing the plans and goals of others. Carol Feldman(1991) identifies modes of thought with modes or genres of discourse, different forms of language for different cultural and cognitive purpose. Adopting von Wright"s distinction between Aristotelian and Galilean mode of explanation, the former by appeal to intentional causation, the latter to mechanical causation. She addresses the literary genres as the most appropriate means for examining intentionality in life and literature and proposes the literary genres, mode of discourse embodied in text and cognizied by readers, which serve as basic modes of thinking. In this paper, the genres showes that they are powerful instruments of adult cognition and, especially, of adult cognition of Aristotelian type, which is the type suited to accounting for human actions. They provide a generative framework for its two constituent activities: teleological explanation of human actions and understanding what they mean in the context. This interpretive frameworks are patterned modes of thought that correspond to the genre pattern of culture.
