담화 표지 연구는 담화 문법을 연구하는 데도 중요한 몫을 차지하지만, 언어의 특성이 잘 반영된 입말의 특성을 연구하는 데도 중요한 몫을 차지한다. 그런데 지금까지 이루어진 연구들에 기술된 담화 표지의 문법 가운데는 수용하기 어려운 내용이 적지 않다. 이 글은 이러한 내용에 대한 문법을 바로잡아 담화 표지에 대한 이해도를 높이고자 한 것이다. 이 글에서 쟁점 과제로 삼은 담화 표지의 문법은 담화 표지의 개념과 문법적 위상, 담화 표지의 특성과 범위, 담화 표지의 유형에 관한 문법이다. 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 담화 표지는 주로 어휘가 문법화되어(추상화되어) 쓰이는 (입말)담화 차원의 양태 표지이다. 담화 표지는 문법적 위상이 통사 차원의 단어와 다르다. 둘째, 담화 표지는 어떤 억양 단위이든 관계없이 억양 단위의 앞이나 뒤에 밀착된 채 덧붙어 실현된다. 그러므로 특정한 통사적 단위나 문법 형태에 실현되는 제약이 없다. 고정된 형태이기 때문에 특정한 통사·의미적 기능을 수행하는 굴절 형태와도 결합되지 않는다. 셋째, 비어휘적 담화 표지나 본디 담화 표지 또는 기능어가 문법화된 담화 표지를 담화 표지의 유형으로 기술한 문법은 담화 표지 문법으로 적절하지 않다. 모든 담화 표지는 어휘나 구, 문장이 문법화된 것이기 때문이다. 담화 표지의 유형은 실현 형식에 따라 어휘 형식으로 실현되는 담화 표지와 구나 문장 형식으로 실현되는 담화 표지로 구분하거나 문법화되기 전의 기원형에 따라 구분할 수 있다. 담화 표지를 기능에 따라 분류하기도 하나, 담화 표지는 동일한 형태가 담화 맥락에 따라 다양한 기능을 수행하기 때문에 담화 표지를 기능에 따라 분류하기 어렵다.
A study on the discourse marker has played a key role in studying a discourse grammar as well as in studying a characteristics of spoken language reflecting the characteristics of a language. However there are so many controversies over the discourse marker grammars which has been studied so far. The objective of this paper is to increase the degree of understanding on discourse marker by clarifying them. In this paper the grammars on the concept, characteristics, scope and types of discourse marker and its grammatical position will be analyzed. The following is the conclusion. First, discourse marker is a discourse-level modal marker which lexicon is grammatized. Grammatical position of discourse marker is different from grammatical position of syntax-level words. Second, discourse marker is realized closely before or after intonation unit regardless of any intonation unit. Therefore it is free from a certain syntactic unit or grammatical form. Also since discourse marker is fixed form, it would not combined with inflective form performing syntactic and meaningful function. Third, The grammar, in which the types of discourse marker could be classified as non-lexical discourse marker or original discourse marker or discourse marker which function word is grammatized, is not pertinent as discourse marker grammar because it is all of discourse marker that lexicon or phrase or sentence is grammatized. So the types of discourse marker is divided into discourse marker realized as a lexicon form and discourse marker realized as phrase or sentence form according to a realization form. Or, it could be divided based on original form before grammatization. Sometimes, discourse marker was classified according to a function. But it is really difficult since the same form of discourse marker performs various functions according to a discourse context.
