To evaluate the alleviating effect of black tea water extract (BTWE) on skin wrinkle, the aging animal model was produced by 12 weeks-irradiation of UVB to the backs of 6~7 weeks old female SKH-1 hairless mice three times a week as each time intensity of 60 mJ/cm2 (1MED) at week 1; 2MED at week 2; 3MED at week 3; and 4MED at week 4~12. And then, BTWE was applied to the backs of the aging animals twice a day, 5 days a week for 4 weeks, 200 μL each time (BTWE 1%: 0.13 g/kg BW/day, 2%: 0.26 g/kg BW/day). Total wrinkle area for the control (C: UVB irradiation+saline treatment) group was 107.2% significantly (p⁄<.05) wider than the normal (N: no UVB irradiation) group. And those of the positive control (PC: UVB irradiation+0.01% retinoic acid application) and experimental (E1: UVB irradiation+1%BTWE application, E2: UVB irradiation+2% BTWE application) groups were significantly (p<0.05) narrower than the C group, as 48.2%, 41.5% and 46.4%, respectively. Collagen fibers were arranged irregularly and sparse in density and some elastic fibers were degenerated in the C group, while they were remarkably improved in the PC, E1 and E2 groups. MMP-3 mRNA expression in the C group was 645.4% significantly (p<0.05) higher than the N group, and those of PC,E1 and E2 groups were significantly (p<0.05) lower than the C group, as 76.8%, 65.9% and 78.0%,
