Through the life history cases of North Korean adolescent refugees, this study observes the experiences obtained in North Korea, process of detection and migration. It explores the process of how the adolescent refugees actively reconstructive their identities. The life of North Korean adolescent refugees in South Korean society is a process of crossing boundaries, overcoming obstacles and at times utilizing such circumstances to present who they are and gain recognition rather than adjusting to or unilaterally being assimilated into the South Korean society. The boundaries faced by these adolescent refugees are intertwined by the mix of various different kinds of boundaries in the South Korean society. As boundaries per se are lines that divide oneself from others, transcendence will accompany the reconstruction of identity. The identity of North Korean adolescent refugees is the result of a complex accumulation of life experience in North Korea, experience of defection and settlement in South Korea. The issue of North Korean adolescent refugees" identity is a matter of whether our society accepts their differences and boundary experiences rather than their adjustment or maladjustment to South Korean society.
이 연구에서는 탈북 청소년들의 북한에서의 생활과 탈북 및 이주 과정의 경험을 연속적인 것으로 보고, 세 명의 탈북 청소년의 생애 사례를 통해 탈북 청소년들이 남한으로 이주 후 자신의 정체성을 능동적으로 재구성해나가는 과정을 살펴보았다. 탈북 청소년들의 남한 사회에서의 삶은 이들이 남한 사회의 질서에 일방적으로 적응하거나 동화되는 과정이라기보다는, 사회에 존재하는 수많은 경계에 부딪히고 이를 넘어서고 가로지르고 때로는 활용하면서, 이 사회에서 자신의 존재를 드러내고 인정받는 과정이다. 이들이 탈북 청소년으로서 부딪히는 경계는 우리 사회 내의 다양한 배제와 차별화의 경계들과 서로 얽혀 있다. 경계 자체가 자신과 타자를 구분하는 선이기 때문에, 경계 가로지르기는 필연적으로 정체성의 재구성을 동반한다. 탈북 청소년들의 정체성은 북한에서의 생활 경험, 탈북 동기, 탈북과 남한 사회 정착 과정에서의 경계 경험 등이 복합적으로 작용하면서 재구성되는 역사성을 지닌다. 탈북 청소년들의 정체성의 문제는 우리 사회에 대한 이들의 적응과 부적응인 것만이 아니라, 우리 새화 내의 경계와, 차이의 수용과 관련된 문제이다.
