The purpose of this paper is to discuss that the ritual presented in Song Gi-suk"s novel can be an ecological approach to overcoming the human alienation that occurs in the process of modernization. In particular, this paper analyzes how conflicts among characters are resolved through rituals and examines how rituals for human relations with the environment can become a foundation. The novel “Dang-je” shows the process of conflict and resolution of communities surrounding ecological regions through rituals. However, individual alienation can not be overcome through the rituals of these communities. Therefore, the individual must invent his own rituals and maintain such rites by inventing ecological places through solidarity with ecological beings. In this novel, an ecological place is the boundary between man and nature, which is an attempt to find an ecological approach from those boundaries rather than centering on man or centering on nature. Staying at the boundary makes the environment fully understandable beyond the insensitivity to the environment or the attachment to the environment. This shows that it is most essential to recall the sensitivity to environment and place in ecological literatures.
이 논문의 목적은 송기숙 소설에 나타난 제의가 근대화 과정에서 발생하는 인간의 소외를 극복하게 하는 하나의 생태학적인 접근법이 될 수 있음을 논의하는 것이다. 특히 인물들이 처한 갈등상황과 해결방식에 있어서 제의적 특성들이 어떻게 영향이 미치고 있는지 분석하고, 인간이 환경과 관계를 맺는데 제의적 절차가 하나의 토대가 될 수 있음을 고찰해보고자 한다. 소설 「당제」는 제의를 통해 생태지역을 둘러싼 공동체의 갈등과 화합의 과정을 보여준다. 그러나 개인의 소외는 이러한 집단의 제의를 통해 극복될 수 없다. 그러므로 개인은 자신만의 제의를 창안할 수밖에 없는데, 이 소설에서는 생태적 존재와의 연대를 통해 생태적인 장소를 발명함으로써 그러한 제의를 이어나갈 수 있었다. 이 소설에서 생태적인 장소란 인간과 자연의 경계선을 의미하는데, 이것은 생태학적인 접근방식의 유효함을 인간중심주의나 자연중심주의가 아닌, 그 경계에서 찾고자 하는 것이다. 경계에 머무는 것은 환경에 대한 무감각이나 환경에 대한 집착을 넘어서서 환경을 온전히 이해하게끔 한다. 이는 생태주의 문학 안에서 환경과 장소에 대한 감수성을 환기하는 일이 가장 근본적인 일임을 시사하는 것이다.
