We studied the photophysical properties of metal-doped photocatalytic materials active under visible light irradiation in order to understand the operating principles. We synthesized chromium-doped nanocrystalline titanium oxide by using the sol-gel and the hydrothermal synthesis methods. After heat treatment for the samples, we characterized their structures and basic properties by using conventional X-ray diffraction patterns, UV-visible absorption spectra and high-resolution transmission emission microscope. The photoluminescence spectra in the visible region at room temperature were taken to study the photophysical properties of the synthesized nanoparticles.
