Doubly-doped PbWO₄ crystals with (Mo6+, PbF₂), (Mo6+, Gd³+), (PbF₂, Gd³+) and (PbF₂, Y³+) were grown by using the Czochralski method. The double-doping effects of the impurity ions in PbWO₄ crystals on the luminescence enhancement were investigated by measurements of the light yield, the X-ray excited luminescence spectra, the optical absorption and the excitation and the emission spectra of UV excited luminescence. Of the series of impurity ions, (PbF₂, Y³3+) show the best effects on the enhancement of luminescence in PbWO₄ crystals. The mechanisms of luminescence enhancement by doubly-doped PbWO₄ crystals are discussed in relation with defect structures in impurity-ion-doped PbWO₄ lattices.
