I researched the substance, peculiarity and contemporary characteristics of films in which an historical figure was form-ized in the Liberation period. At that time, a famous independence activist appeared in a newsreel, yet his political contemporaries didn"t often appear in documentary films. However, many feature filmsusing an historic individuall as a main character were produced. The persons illustrated in these movies were figures from the past who were active in Korean anti-Japanese movements. Such a one"s life story served as an epic foundation for those movies. Interestingly, it was just before such a movie was produced that they became famous. On the other hand, the movies were genre-ized and press-agented to build audience expectation and interest. However, it was situations both domestic and abroad during this period that had a large influence on the production tendencies of such works.
본고는 역사적 실존 인물을 다룬 해방기 한국영화의 실체 및 특징, 시대와의 관계성을 규명하려한 연구의 결과물이다. 해방기 제작된 뉴스영화에는 김구, 김규식, 여운형, 이승만 등 사회적 명망을 지닌 독립운동가들이 등장하였으나, 기록영화의 경우 당대 정치적 인물이 자주 소재화되지는 못하였다. 극영화 부문에서는 역사적 실존 인물을 다룬 작품의 제작 활동이 두드러졌다. 안중근, 이준, 윤봉길, 주기철, 유관순, 안창남 등 국권침탈기 또는 일제강점기 조국의 해방과 독립을 위해 헌신한 인물을 대상화한 작품들이 연이어 만들어졌다. 이들 영화는 특정 인물의 생애를 통해 민족혼과 애국심의 형성 배경 및 과정을 펼쳐 보이면서 일본 제국주의 타파 또는 대항을 위한 이들의 활약상을 서사적 토대로 삼았다. 그런데 당시 극영화를 통해 대중에게 더욱 친숙해진 실존 인물들은 어수선한 해방 공간에서 민족의 우수성과 대동단결 및 독립국가 수립의 정당성을 강조하기 위해 재소환된 경우가 많았다. 한편으로 역사적 인물을 다룬 해방기 극영화는 관객의 기대와 흥미를 유발하며 대중성(상업적 관객성)을 확보하려 하였다. 이러한 차원에서 제작 여건의 마련과 흥행 성공의 담보를 위한 장르화 추세가 가시화되었고 신문 등 인쇄 매체 상에서의 홍보 또한 이어졌다. 그러나 이들 작품의 제작 경향에 기본적이면서도 커다란 영향을 미친 것은 동시기 국내외 정세였다. 당대 정치적 헤게모니가 미군정과 우익 정치 세력에 집중되면서 관련 영화 속 인물의 부류와 형상화의 방식 등이 특수한 추세를 보이게 되었던 것이다.
