It is particularly important for us to have a theological discussion before making specific suggestions for the social welfare programs for the elderly. This article will discuss four-related subjects with regard to the unique situation of the elderly, that is, life of elderly, health of elderly, aging and illness of elderly, and death of elderly. These discussions will establish the basic but very important theological understanding and knowledge that is essential proir to the church"s involvement in the welfare program for the elderly. The Bible has a positive outlook about the elderly and being old. The elderlies are the legitimate and wise members of society who can give advices for families, church, society and country. They, therefore, have not only a function but also duty to exercise their capacity of leadership and education. The Bible does not perceive the old age unfortunate or embarrassing rather as a thing of glory in life. Meanwhile, the Bible understands the elderly as ones who need care and support. It is suggested that not only their children but the whole society should share responsibility for the welfare of the elderly. From a theological point of view, it is important to note that the old age or the aging is a natural process or stage that lies between life and death. The proper respect and treat for the elderly stems from the proper biblical understanding of life, and the pursuit of the quality life at the old age is an issue of taking care of life given by God, that is, an issue of health. The aging and the illness of the elderlies, which are characteristics of the old age, should be embraced with dignity as much desire as to pursue healthy life. It is essential to understand that death, the biggest threat to the human existence, is the result of sin. In Christ, however, death can be overcome; it is only the end of the power and influence of sin and the entrance to eternal life for those who are in Christ. It is concluded that a theological consideration of those specific issues of the elderly - namely, life, health, aging, and death of elderly - is not only helpful but also establishes theoretical justification and ground prior to the practical recommendation as to the social welfare for the elderly.
노인복지를 논하기에 앞서, 관련된 신학적 주제에 대해 토의 하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 본 논문은 노인의 특수 상황을 이해하기 위해여 네 개의 주제, 노인의 생명, 노인의 건강, 노화와 노환, 노인의 죽음에 대하여 논함으로써 노인복지를 위해 기초적 신학적 이해를 도모하고자 한다. 성경은 노인/고령화를 매우 긍정적으로 다루고 있다. 사회의 정상적인 일원이며, 가정과 교회와 사회와 국가를 위해 조언을 해 줄 수 있는 지혜자들이며, 고로 지도적, 교육적 기능의 책임이 있는 것으로 말하고 있다. 또한 노인이 되는 것을 성경은 불행한 것이나, 수치스런 것으로 여기는 것이 아니라, 오히려 인생의 영광으로 보고 있다. 그러면서도, 성경은 노인이 보호가 필요한 대상으로 보고 있다. 자손들뿐만이 아니라, 사회가 노인을 공경할 것, 즉 복지에 대해서도 책임이 있다고 말하고 있을 주목할 필요가 있다. 신학적으로 볼 때, 노인이 된다는 것은 생명과 죽음 사이의 한 자연스런 과정 또는 단계로 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 노인의 존엄성은 생명 자체에 대한 올바른 성경적 이해에 근거하며, 노년기의 삶의 질적 추구는 바로 하나님이 주신 생명을 관리하는 문제, 즉 노인의 건강의 특수성을 이해하는 문제이다. 노년기의 특징인 노화와 노환에 대해서는, 건강을 추구하고픈 열망만큼 생명의 품위를 잃지 않는 범위에서 노화와 질병의 문제를 받아들이는 것이 중요하다. 인간존재의 가장 큰 위협인 죽음에 대해서는 먼저 죄의 결과임을 인식하면서, 그러나 그리스도 안에서 죽음은 죄의 영향의 종료이며 영생으로의 관문으로 이해함으로써 죽음의 문제를 극복할 수 있게 될 것이다. 이같은 노인의 특수 상황과 깊은 관련이 있는 생명, 건강, 노화, 죽음에 대해 성경을 통해서 신학적 숙고가 먼저 선행되어질 때, 노인복지에 대한 이론적 근거 및 당위성이 마련될 수 있으리라 기대해 본다.
