The Effects of Hanja Primes on the Recognition of Hanja Words Printed in Hangul

Two experiments were conducted to examine the morphological processing of Hanja words. Using the constituent priming method for each trial, either a monosyllabic Hanja or Hangul prime was presented either visibly or masked prior to the presentation of a bisyllabic Hanja compound target written in Hangul. Both poor and skilled Hanja readers were asked to judge if the presented target stimulus was a word or not. The results showed that skilled Hanja readers responded faster to a target compound when the prime matched the target’s initial constituent and that the constituent priming effect was greater for Hanja primes than for Hangul primes. In contrast, for poor Hanja readers, no priming effects were observed for the Hanja and Hangul primes. These results are consistent with a proposal that an absence of morphological facilitation for Hanja words within previous studies may have been due to the ambiguous Kulja- morpheme correspondences of Hangul words.
