This paper focuses on the voices from the middle ground in the history of the evolution controversy in America. The controversy that started with the so-called “Monkey Trial” in the 1920s has been the subject of numerous studies. However, the curious common factor in these studies was that they focused on the extreme parties of the conflict and neglected voices from the middle. They viewed the history of the evolutionary controversy from the perspectives of fundamentalism vs. modernism, science vs. religion, or conservative vs. liberal. As an attempt to get a balanced view on this controversy, I focus on the middle position in this paper by analyzing a group of evangelical scientists called “The American Scientific Affiliation” and their efforts to mediate the controversy. I hope this forgotten story fills one of the gaps in the recent history of the creation-evolution controversy.
이 논문은 미국 진화론 논쟁사에서 소외되었던 중도적 목소리에 대한 연구이다. 1920년대의 소위 원숭이 재판은 모더니즘과 근본주의가 격돌한 20세기 미국 지성사의 대표적 사건으로 기억되며 이는 1970년대 창조-진화 논쟁으로 부활한다. 미국의 진화론 논쟁에 대해서는 그동안 많은 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 이 연구들의 공통된 특징은 중도적 목소리에 대한 연구는 소외되었다는 것이다. 대부분의 연구들은 투쟁의 관점에서 모더니즘과 근본주의, 과학과 종교, 진보와 보수적 이념간의 격돌로 20세기 미국 진화론 논쟁사를 조망해왔다. 본 연구는 미국 진화론 논쟁사에 대한 균형 잡힌 이해를 위해 중도적 목소리에 귀 기울이고자 한다. 특별히 복음주의 기독교 과학자들의 모임이며 대표적 중도 단체인 미국과학자연맹(American Scientific Affiliation: ASA)에 초점을 맞추어 극단적으로 양분화되어가는 논쟁을 중재하려는 이들의 노력을 살펴볼 것이다. ASA의 중재는 1980년대 초 법정논쟁으로까지 비화한 창조-진화 논쟁의 후유증을 수습하기 위한 노력으로 대표된다. 창조-진화로 양극화된 논쟁구도 속에 학생, 학부모, 교사들은 갈피를 잡지 못했고 중고등학교의 생물학 교육은 끊임없는 논쟁의 대상이 되었다. 이러한 극단적 대치상황을 중재하기 위해 ASA는 논쟁 상황에서의 과학교육: 미국과학자연맹의 견해란 소책자를 발간한다. 본 논문은 이 소 책자의 발간과정과 후속논쟁을 통해 창조-진화 논쟁을 중재하고자 하는 중도적 입장의 전개과정을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 필자는 출판자료뿐만 아니라 회의록, 서신 등 미출판 자료도 포함했으며 이 연구가 그간 미국 진화론논쟁사 연구에서 소외된 영역의 한 조각을 채우리라 기대한다.
