This paper analyzes the strategies taken by Smith, the translator of The Vegetarian, to cross cultural differences, assuming she translated it with emphasis on readability and acceptability. One of her strategies is to change the focus to read characters’ characteristics. In the source text, the original characters follow the norms of behavior that emphasize group and relationship based on the social characteristics of high-context society, but the same characters in the target text act according to their personalities, which is the characteristic of low-context society. The heroin, YoungHye is transformed from an easygoing woman to a passive woman, and the husband becomes the person who intentionally organizes his life from the person who uses the condition. Therefore, the same person shows different aspect upon each culture, it is the cultural perspective what the translator changed. On the stylistic side, especially, the sentence with cultural implications is transformed or deleted by the translator"s own viewpoint so that the reader of the target culture can easily understand it. In addition, she changed the Korean style into the English style. As a result, this translated book is read well enough to be considered an original English one by readers. This translation strategy of domestication is intended for readers who value content rather than cultural specificity and who have little interest in the original language and vocabulary. Therefore, this translation is another English book of The Vegetarian, written in the background of Korea.
본 논문은 2016년 맨 부커 국제 문학상을 수상한 데보라 스미스의 The Vegetarian이 가독성과 수용성 위주로 번역했다고 전제하고, 번역가가 문화적 차이를 가로지르기 위해 취한 전략을 분석한다. 내용면을 살펴보면, 원본의 인물들은 고맥락 사회라는 사회적 특성상 집단과 관계를 중시하는 행위규범에 따르지만, 번역본의 인물들은 저맥락 사회의 특징인 개인 중시 사고에 따라 각자의 성격에 따라 행동한다. 영혜는 무난한 여인에서 수동적인 여인으로, 남편은 정황을 활용하는 인물에서 삶을 의도적으로 이끌어가는 인물로 변한다. 동일한 인물을 다른 문화적 관점에서 봄에 따라 중요한 지점이 달라지는 것이다. 형식면에서는 특히 문화적 암시 사항이 있는 문장을 번역가 자신의 시각으로 변형하거나 삭제해서 대상문화의 독자가 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 했다. 또한 한국어문체를 영어다운 문체로 변화시켰다. 그 결과 이 번역은 원본이라고 여겨질 정도로 독자들에게 잘 읽힌다. 이 자국화 번역 전략은 문화적 특이성보다는 내용을 중시하고 원본의 언어와 어휘에는 전혀 관심이 없는 독자들을 대상으로 한 것이다. 따라서 이 번역본은 한국을 배경으로 쓰인 영문학, 또 다른 『채식주의자』이다.
