This study investigate the meaning, potential effects, and implications of TV pubic service advertisements that explicitly transmit a certain message concerning multiculturalism. Because of the time restriction, TV public service advertising tends to be organized in a way that is effective and condensed to transmit its intended message to the general public. As for data analysis, this study applies qualitative text analysis and critical lenses to every aspects of selected public service advertizing as a way of reaching to hidden assumptions, implicit meanings, and potential effects of them. Although it takes time consuming efforts, and it does not allow to produce irreplaceable results, this qualitative text analysis process itself is confident enough to demonstrate a possible critical interpretation based on textual evidence and grounded on the logical relationship among the textual message. This study provides a detailed analysis and critique of TV public service advertising practices on multiculturalism. This study also offers a basic framework to investigate the meanings and effects of TV public service advertising.
최근 들어, ‘다문화’는 우리의 일상에서 매우 자주 접하게 되는 용어가 되어가고 있다. 학문분야 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 대중매체에서도 다문화는 매우 흥미 있는 주제로 다루어지고 있다. 그러나 우리에게 ‘다문화’라는 개념은 여전히 모호한 측면이 많다. 이는 ‘다문화’라는 동일한 용어를 사용하고 있지만, 각각의 다양한 방식으로 개념화한 다문화 논의와 실천 사례들이 오히려 혼란을 초래하고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 다문화주의에 대한 다양한 관점을 살펴 볼 수 있는 유형화 분류를 제시하고, 이를 토대로 TV 공익 광고물에서 다문화를 어떻게 반영하고 있는가를 질적 텍스트분석(qualitative text analysis)으로 심층 분석하여, 향후 우리사회에서 다문화를 어떻게 다루어야할 것인가에 대한 논의를 확대하고자 한다. 다양한 대중매체 중에서도 TV 광고물을 분석대상으로 선정한 것은 다음과 같은 이유에서이다. TV 광고물은 미리 설정된 의미와 주메시지를 짧은 시간 안에 함축적으로 전달하는 강력한 표현물이며, TV 광고물을 연구 대상으로 선정하여 심층적인으로 분석한 경우는 거의 드물었기 때문이다. 각 광고물에 대한 세밀한 분석 결과는, 향후 기업과 정부기관 차원에서 다문화를 어떻게 상정하고 다루어야하는가에 대한 방향을 제시하고, 개인적 차원에서 일상에서 접하는 다양한 다문화적 텍스트를 어떻게 해석하고 비판적으로 받아들여야 하는가에 대한 시사점을 제공한다.
