Buddy programs, actively utilized in many preschools and primary schools in North America, have been developed for various purposes and functions to facilitate relationships among children, teachers, parents, and community. The purpose of this study was to explore early childhood teachers’ general perception on buddy programs, and their particular needs for a prosociality-focused buddy program with cross-aged transactions of young children. A questionnaire, which was developed through literature review of the cross-aged transactions and buddy programs, was completed to 223 teachers or directors of kindergartens or child care centers. The result showed that many participating teachers viewed the cross-aged transaction as necessary and strongly recognized the urgent need for developing prosociality-focused buddy programs for young children. It suggested that caring community experiences could make meaningful contributions to cross-aged transactions of young children. The findings also provided applicable and effective teaching-learning methods of the prosociality-focused buddy program, including time, space, support system, and other needed components.
버디 프로그램은 북미 지역에서 유아교육기관과 초등학교 현장 등의 교육기관에 상당히 일반화되어, 학습자, 교사, 부모, 지역사회 등의 다양한 관계에서 여러 목적과 형태로 적용되어 폭넓게 활용되고 있다. 본 연구는 단일연령 학급 유아들의 연령 간 교류에 대한 교사들의 전반적 인식과 친사회성을 증진시킬 수 있는 버디 프로그램에 대한 요구를 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 전국의 유치원 및 어린이집의 원장, 원감 및 교사 총 223명을 대상으로 조사하였다. 연구결과, 참여교사 대다수는 유아의 연령 간 교류가 필요하다고 인식하고 있었으며, 연령 간 상호작용이 매우 제한되어 있는 교육 현장에서 친사회성 증진 버디 프로그램 개발의 필요성에 대해 공감하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 바람직한 유아의 연령 간 교류를 실천하기 위해서는 보살핌 교육공동체의 구축이 중요할 것으로 제안되었다. 그 밖에 친사회성 증진 버디 프로그램에 대한 효과적인 교수-학습 방법 및 활동 유형, 시 공간 활용 및 지원 등에 대한 방안이 제시되었다.
