Evolution Trends of Core Networks in 3rd Generation Cellular Systems

Third generation cellular systems are now evolving into IP-based network to support explosively increasing demand on multimedia service.? In this paper, we review the evolution history of 3G cellular systems, especially focused on the core networks and services. We also investigate the standardization trends of 3GPP, 3GPP and OHG, which accelerate the introduction of IP multimedia services and the support of international roaming.

3세대 이동통신 시스템은 기존의 음성 서비스를 그대로 지원하면서 이동통신망에서의 급증하는 무선 데이터 수요와 멀티미디어 서비스를 효과적으로 지원하기 위하여 IP 네트워크 기반으로 진화하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 3세대 이동통신 시스템의 진화 동향을 핵심망 및 서비스 관점에서 살펴보고자 한다. 또한 IP 멀티미디어 서비스의 도입을 가속화하고 단말의 국제 로밍을 원활히 지원하기 위한 3GPP/3GPP2의 핵심망 Harmonization과 관련한 표준화 동향을 살펴본다.
